Recap of Event 13
With the men’s opening heat underway, a solid base pace seemed the strategy across the board. The commentary team said the required pace to not be dropped from the event in the column portion was a 500m split under 1:37.
Bryant and Paulson were the first to clear the ergometer. As the rest of the heat joined them, Thruster made the athlete look like a piston on wide shots. Paulson continued to lead the heat — he went 10 It was a full 10 thruster before entering the 4th set.
Paulson’s lead extended into Thruster’s final set, but he couldn’t hold it as Crouch did a muscle-up first. Upenieks tirelessly dived into muscle-ups to take the lead in the heat. He repeated 12 times before resting.
During that break, Bryant grabbed the lead and didn’t let go. He crossed the finish line in his 8:52.79 to win Heat 1. Upenieks crossed the line second in 9:15.21. Crouch finished after eight seconds. He failed to finish two of them within the time limit.
Men’s Heat 2
The rowers’ pace was the same in Heat 2. Athletes treated it as a buy-in to get their heart rate up. Lazar Džukić rested the least and took an early lead with Thruster.
Đukić and Sager were battling for the lead in the heat as they started the final thruster set. A temporary break by Đukić and Sager was the first to build muscle. However, Djukić took the lead shortly after Sager paused on the rig.
Sager and Đukić had 10 reps to go and plenty of time to beat Briant’s time from Heat 1. Džukić finished first, crossing the line to win the heat at 7:59.70. Sager finished 10 seconds behind him, capping off his ninth CrossFit Games appearance.
Men’s Heat 3
Medeiros knew that a ninth-place finish in the event would give him a second game title. He took a deep breath to zone in and the first line started. Khrennikov, Hopper, and Kwant were the first to use thrusters. Medeiros was a little behind, but his rate of cycle was faster than Garard and Khrennikov.
Hopper set the pace with the second set of thrusters by minimizing rest. Quant stayed with him. Vellner and Khrennikov also took the lead. Medeiros increased his rate for the cycle and stayed within what was needed to defend the overall lead.
Medeiros’ cycle rate took the lead in the heat and he was the first to muscle up with Khrennikov. The Russian jumped to the bar first and he got two reps ahead of Medeiros, but didn’t go far enough to change the overall standings.
Khrennikov didn’t make it to the final bar due to his muscle up, but it didn’t matter as he crossed the finish line first with a time of 8:09.71. Medeiros took a break with one reps to go, but finished second in his heat to earn the crown as the Fittest Man on Earth®..

Women’s Heat One
Rowing in the opening heat of the women’s division was well paced by everyone, but picked up speed before the end. For the first time in the event, two of his competitors, Helgadottir and Fuselier, failed to complete the line in the stipulated time.
Freyová led the Heat in the opening set for Thruster. It was a three-way dance led by her, Ghazan and Korenbrander. Powers rushed into the mix for the lead, but Freyova held on as the muscle-ups began. Freyová’s lead extended deep into the heat’s gained muscle-up, crossing the finish line first with a time of 9:31.77. Powers came second in 9:55.34.
Women’s Heat 2
The competitors in Heat 2 spun their jets between rows to avoid the same fate as Helgadottir and Fuselier. It didn’t look easy, but everyone in Heat 2 made it to Thruster. Turner established his rate for the fastest cycle in the first set, followed by Adams and Campbell.
That trio got ahead of the other heats with double-digit reps by the time they jumped on the bar for muscle-ups. It took 12 repetitions to overtake the lead. As Turner dropped off the lead pace, Campbell took a short break before regaining it.
Campbell quickly moved to the final bar and scored the last 10 reps without a break, finishing first with a time of 8:29.53. Adams was still four rep behind her, but she finished second in 8:56.87.
Women’s Heat 3
The big battle in the final heat was between Brandon and Horvath for the bronze medal of the competition. Toomey and O’Brien held onto their 1st overall and his 2nd place respectively, barring the timeline cataclysm.
Horvath, Brandon, Toomey and O’Brien were the first to use thrusters. Horvath was the first athlete in either division not to rest between the row and the thruster. Toomey was moving more slowly than he would have been under pressure, She has been voted the healthiest woman on earth six times.
Horvath acted like a machine through the first 11 muscle-ups, but eventually took the first break of every event. She had a four-rep lead over Sanders and almost a double-digit lead over Brandon. O’Brien passed him ten seconds behind him, just one second behind Horvath.
Toomey completed his last 10 muscle-ups and crossed the finish line in 9:47.28, making him the all-time leading individual crossfitter.
